Bulgaria has entered a new phase of military modernization with the reception of the Hrabri, its first domestically produced ship in 100 years.

The patrol ship, from the MMPV 90 project, marks the beginning of the fleet renewal and symbolizes the advancement of the local shipbuilding industry. The delivery comes amidst the anticipation of European approval for new projects under the SAFE mechanism, which includes the acquisition of additional missiles to strengthen the capabilities of two future ships.

Built in partnership with the German group NVL, the Hrabri is the result of a $583.48 million contract signed in 2020 for the construction of two vessels. The financially limited program led to the choice of a more economical design, a medium-sized coastal patrol vessel, rather than a full corvette. Nevertheless, the ship incorporates important advancements, with modern armaments and electronic systems mostly provided by Swedish company Saab.

With a length of 90 meters and a standard displacement of 2,100 tons, the Hrabri can reach speeds of 25 knots and operate with an autonomy of seven days. Its armament includes RBS-15 Mk 3+ anti-ship missiles, a VL-MICA air defense system, a 76mm gun, A244/S torpedoes, and a hangar for a Panther helicopter.

The second ship of the class, Smeli, has already been launched and is expected to further strengthen Bulgaria’s maritime defense in the coming years.
